Strange (comics)
Strange, in the context of comic books, most commonly refers to Doctor Strange, a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by writer Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko, Doctor Strange first appeared in Strange Tales #110 (July 1963).
Doctor Strange, whose real name is Stephen Strange, is a brilliant but egotistical neurosurgeon who, after a car accident severely damages his hands, embarks on a journey to find a cure. He eventually becomes the disciple of the Ancient One, a sorcerer who teaches him the mystic arts. Strange becomes a master of both the mystic and the martial arts and assumes the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme, Earth's primary protector against magical and mystical threats.
The character's storylines typically involve interdimensional travel, battles against powerful magical beings, and exploration of mystical realms. Doctor Strange utilizes spells, artifacts, and his own inherent magical abilities to defend the world. Key artifacts associated with the character include the Eye of Agamotto, the Cloak of Levitation, and the Book of the Vishanti.
Beyond the primary Doctor Strange character, the word "strange" may also be used more generally to describe comics with a focus on the supernatural, horror, or the bizarre. It can also refer to comics titles or series that feature unusual characters, settings, or plotlines.
The influence of Doctor Strange extends beyond comic books, having been adapted into animated television series, films within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and various video games. He is a significant character in the broader Marvel universe, frequently interacting with other superheroes and playing a crucial role in major crossover events.
