Liripipe

A liripipe is a long, dangling tail or streamer attached to a hood, hat, or cap, especially in medieval and Renaissance European fashion. It originated as a practical extension of the hood, serving as a scarf or to tie the hood securely. Over time, the liripipe evolved into a purely decorative element, often becoming excessively long and elaborately decorated, signifying status and wealth. Liripipes were worn by both men and women, though the style and length varied according to gender, social class, and period. The term can also, less commonly, refer to a similar decorative feature on other types of clothing.
