Steve Baker (motorcyclist)
Steve Baker is an American former professional motorcycle racer, best known for being the first American to win a road racing World Championship. While other Americans had previously achieved success in Grand Prix racing, Baker's 1977 Formula 750 World Championship secured his place in history.
Born in Bellingham, Washington, Baker began his racing career on local circuits before progressing to national and international competition. He raced primarily in the Formula 750 and Grand Prix classes. In 1977, riding a Yamaha, he secured the Formula 750 World Championship title, showcasing considerable skill and consistency throughout the season. He consistently challenged established European riders.
His career was cut short due to injuries sustained in a racing accident in 1978. Despite the relatively short duration of his professional career, Steve Baker made a lasting impact on American motorcycle racing. He is remembered as a pioneer and a talented rider who paved the way for future generations of American racers to achieve international success. He was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1999.
