Vartius
Vartius is a former Finnish border guard station and village located in the Kainuu region of Finland, near the border with Russia. It lies within the municipality of Kuhmo. Historically significant due to its role in guarding Finland's eastern border, Vartius experienced periods of activity during wartime and fluctuating population sizes.
History:
Vartius's primary function was as a border crossing point and base for border guards. Its importance rose and fell depending on the political climate and the status of Finland-Russia relations. During periods of conflict, such as the Winter War and Continuation War, Vartius played a crucial role in defense and military operations. Following the cessation of hostilities, it reverted to its function as a border control point.
The village surrounding the border station provided housing and services for the border guards and their families. Over time, as border control measures evolved and the nature of the border changed, the need for a large, permanently stationed border guard presence decreased.
Present Day:
While the manned border station itself may have undergone changes in operational status (potentially being closed or operating with reduced staff), the Vartius area remains a point of passage and connection between Finland and Russia. The physical infrastructure of the former border guard station, along with surrounding buildings, may still exist, though their current usage can vary. The area now primarily serves as a border crossing for freight and passenger traffic. The road passing through Vartius is an important route for trade and transportation between the two countries.
