Spirit (Leona Lewis album)
Spirit is the debut studio album by British singer Leona Lewis, released in November 2007 in the United Kingdom and Ireland, and in April 2008 in the United States. Following her victory on the third series of The X Factor in December 2006, Lewis signed a record deal with Simon Cowell's Syco Music and began working on the album.
The album is primarily a pop and R&B record, with influences of soul, gospel, and contemporary adult genres. It features production from several prominent producers, including Steve Mac, Steve Robson, Stargate, and Dallas Austin. Lyrically, the album explores themes of love, loss, and empowerment.
Spirit spawned several successful singles, including the worldwide hit "Bleeding Love," which topped charts in numerous countries. Other notable singles include "Better in Time/Footprints in the Sand," "Forgive Me," and "Run."
The album was a commercial success globally, topping charts in the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, Australia, and other countries. It was certified diamond in the UK and multi-platinum in several other territories, making Lewis the first British female solo artist to top the Billboard 200 chart in over 20 years.
Spirit received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised Lewis's vocal ability and the album's production quality. However, some critics found the album to be formulaic and lacking in originality. Despite this, the album established Leona Lewis as a prominent figure in the music industry and solidified her status as a successful recording artist.
