Spiral (character)

Spiral, also known as Rita Wayword or Ricochet Rita, is a fictional character appearing in comic books published by Marvel Comics, primarily associated with the X-Men franchise. Created by writer Chris Claremont and artist Arthur Adams, she first appeared in Longshot #1 (September 1985).

Spiral is a powerful sorceress and cyborg, renowned for her six arms, each usually wielding a weapon. She is most frequently depicted as a major villain, often serving as a henchman or ally to Mojo, the tyrannical ruler of Mojoworld, a dimension obsessed with gladiatorial combat and television programming.

Spiral's origin story is convoluted and often involves time travel and manipulation by Mojo. It is generally understood that she was once a human stuntwoman and aspiring actress named Rita Wayword. During an encounter with Longshot, Mojo kidnapped her and subjected her to extensive cybernetic enhancements and magical alterations, transforming her into the multi-limbed Spiral. This process instilled in her a twisted sense of loyalty to Mojo and a fragmented personality.

Her powers include advanced magical abilities, teleportation, cybernetic strength and agility, and manipulation of probability. She is a skilled fighter and strategist, making her a formidable opponent for the X-Men and other heroes. She also possesses the ability to create "body banks" or clones of herself, further complicating her actions and motivations.

Spiral's motivations are complex. While seemingly subservient to Mojo, she often acts with her own hidden agenda, driven by a desire for chaos and a twisted sense of artistry. Her relationship with Longshot, stemming from her past life as Rita Wayword, adds another layer to her character, often resulting in internal conflict and unpredictable behavior. She has been both a foe and, on rare occasions, a reluctant ally to the X-Men.
