Shōwa (1312–1317)
The Shōwa era (正和) was a Japanese era name (年号, nengō, literally "year name") that spanned the years from 1312 to 1317. This period fell within the late Kamakura period. The reigning emperor during this era was Emperor Hanazono.
The era was preceded by Ōchō and followed by Bunpō.
The name "Shōwa" is derived from a passage in the Book of Documents (書経) and the Book of Poetry (詩経). The characters used signify "rectitude harmonizes" or "correct harmony."
Significant events that occurred during the Shōwa era included continued political maneuvering and struggles between the various factions within the Kamakura shogunate, as well as ongoing attempts by the imperial court to assert its authority. The instability of the era contributed to the eventual weakening of the Kamakura shogunate and its subsequent fall in the early 14th century.
