Walter Gilbert (sculptor)

Walter Gilbert (1829-1895) was a prominent English sculptor of the Victorian era. He is best known for his work in metal, often collaborating with his son, Arthur Gilbert.

Gilbert initially trained as a drawing master and designer before focusing on sculpture. He was associated with the revival of metalwork in the decorative arts, particularly bronze.

His notable works include the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain (also known as Eros) in Piccadilly Circus, London, where he executed the allegorical figure of Anteros (often mistakenly identified as Eros) while Alfred Gilbert was responsible for the overall design and other sculptural elements. Walter Gilbert also contributed to the bronze statuary at the Albert Memorial, designed by George Gilbert Scott.

He frequently collaborated with other artists and architects, producing decorative elements and sculptural features for buildings and monuments. His work is characterised by its detailed craftsmanship and allegorical themes, reflecting the artistic sensibilities of the Victorian period. While his son, Alfred Gilbert, gained wider recognition, Walter Gilbert's contributions to public art and architectural sculpture in the 19th century are significant.
