Yuriko Yamaguchi (sculptor)

Yuriko Yamaguchi (born 1948) is a Japanese-American sculptor known for her large-scale, suspended wood sculptures. Her work often explores themes of nature, growth, and transformation, and is characterized by its organic forms and dynamic presence.

Yamaguchi's sculptures are typically constructed from thin strips of wood, often cedar or basswood, which are carefully bent and interwoven to create complex, flowing structures. These structures are then suspended from the ceiling, allowing them to move and interact with the surrounding space.

Her artistic practice often involves a process of intuitive making, where the form of the sculpture emerges organically from the interaction between the artist and the materials. She has exhibited her work extensively in museums and galleries across the United States and internationally.

Yamaguchi received her MFA from the University of Washington in 1983.
