Manolo (sculptor)

Manolo, whose full name is Manuel Martínez Hugué, (April 29, 1872 – November 17, 1945) was a Catalan sculptor, painter, and ceramicist. He is best known for his early 20th-century sculptures, characterized by their simplicity and elegance.

Born in Barcelona, Manolo was associated with the Parisian avant-garde movements of the early 1900s. He befriended and influenced artists such as Pablo Picasso and Juan Gris. He played a significant role in the development of Cubism, although his own work maintained a distinct, more lyrical style.

Manolo's sculptures often depicted female figures, animals, and everyday objects. He worked with various materials, including bronze, stone, and wood. His pieces are recognizable for their smooth surfaces, stylized forms, and a sense of classical harmony.

Later in his career, Manolo returned to Catalonia and focused on sculpture and ceramic work reflecting local themes and traditions. He died in Caldes de Montbui, Spain. His work can be found in major museums around the world.
