SS Auby

The SS Auby was a French cargo ship built in 1919 by Chantiers Navals Français, Blainville. It was owned and operated by Compagnie Générale Transatlantique (CGT), also known as the French Line. Primarily used for transporting goods and potentially passengers on various trade routes, its service history was relatively short.

The SS Auby was sunk on March 17, 1942, by the German submarine U-99, commanded by Oberleutnant zur See Hans-Jürgen Gleditsch. The ship was sailing unescorted in the North Atlantic, approximately 250 nautical miles off the coast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, when it was torpedoed. All 44 crew members perished in the sinking.

The sinking of the SS Auby contributed to the overall losses of merchant shipping during World War II and highlights the dangers faced by vessels traversing the Atlantic Ocean during that period. The event is documented in maritime archives and historical records pertaining to wartime shipping casualties.
