List of speakers of the House of Representatives (Hungary)

The Speaker of the House of Representatives (Hungarian: A Képviselőház elnöke) was the presiding officer of the House of Representatives of Hungary. The House of Representatives existed from 1848 to 1849 and then from 1861 to 1918 as the lower house of the Diet (or Parliament) of Hungary (from 1867 known as Austria-Hungary). The position was abolished with the dissolution of Austria-Hungary and the establishment of the Hungarian Republic in 1918, when the National Council assumed legislative powers. The role was largely ceremonial but important for maintaining order during debates, recognizing speakers, and certifying legislation.

The Speaker was elected by the members of the House from among their own ranks. Typically, a prominent member of the ruling party or coalition would be chosen. The Speaker served for the duration of the parliamentary term, unless they resigned or lost their seat in a subsequent election.

Key responsibilities included:

  • Presiding over sessions of the House.
  • Maintaining order and decorum during debates.
  • Recognizing members who wished to speak.
  • Putting motions to a vote.
  • Certifying the results of votes.
  • Representing the House in its dealings with the government and other bodies.

Notable Speakers of the House of Representatives (Hungary) included individuals who later went on to hold other significant positions in Hungarian politics. The exact list of speakers and their tenures can be found in historical records of the Hungarian Parliament.
