Ronald Robertson (figure skater)

Ronald "Ronnie" Robertson (January 25, 1937 – April 22, 2000) was an American figure skater who was a pioneer in athletic jumping in the sport. He is best known for winning the silver medal at the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy.

Robertson rose to prominence in the mid-1950s, captivating audiences with his powerful and dynamic jumps. He was known for his high-flying leaps, particularly his revolutionary double axel, which was considered a groundbreaking feat at the time. He also competed in the World Figure Skating Championships, earning a silver medal in 1955 and a bronze medal in 1956.

His skating career was relatively short. After turning professional following the 1956 World Championships, Robertson joined the Ice Follies, where he continued to showcase his athletic style. However, his professional career was hampered by health problems and personal struggles.

Despite his short competitive career, Ronnie Robertson is remembered as a pivotal figure in the history of figure skating. His emphasis on athleticism and jumping significantly influenced the direction of the sport, paving the way for future generations of skaters who embraced powerful and dynamic performances. He was inducted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1980.
