Ihor Shamo

Ihor Naumovych Shamo (Ukrainian: Ігор Наумович Шамо; 21 February 1925 – 17 August 1982) was a prominent Ukrainian composer. He was born in Kyiv and is best known for his contributions to Ukrainian popular song, symphonic music, and chamber music.

Shamo studied at the Kyiv Conservatory with Borys Lyatoshynsky, graduating in 1951. He became a prolific composer across multiple genres. His style is characterized by its melodic richness, accessibility, and incorporation of Ukrainian folk music elements.

His most famous works include songs like "Kyieve мій" ("My Kyiv"), which became an unofficial anthem of the city, and numerous other popular songs, many of which were performed by renowned Ukrainian singers. He also composed symphonies, ballets, and instrumental pieces.

Shamo received numerous awards and honors during his career, including the title of People's Artist of the Ukrainian SSR. His music continues to be performed and appreciated in Ukraine and beyond.
