Rags to Riches (horse)

Rags to Riches was an American Thoroughbred racehorse, most famous for winning the 2007 Belmont Stakes. She was the first filly to win the Belmont Stakes since Genuine Risk in 1980, and only the third filly to ever win the race.

Bred and owned by Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith (as part of the Coolmore Stud operation), Rags to Riches was trained by Todd Pletcher. She was sired by A.P. Indy, a Hall of Fame racehorse and prominent sire, out of the mare Better Than Honour.

Her racing career was relatively short but impactful. Prior to the Belmont, she won the Las Virgenes Stakes, the Santa Anita Oaks, and the Kentucky Oaks in 2007. The Belmont Stakes win was particularly notable as she defeated eventual two-time Horse of the Year Curlin in a thrilling stretch duel.

Following the Belmont Stakes, Rags to Riches suffered a hairline fracture in her right front leg, which ultimately led to her retirement from racing. Her career earnings totaled $1,342,528.

After her racing career, Rags to Riches became a broodmare. She produced several foals, though none achieved the same level of success as their dam on the racetrack.
