Rijsoord
Rijsoord is a village in the municipality of Ridderkerk, in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is located on the island of IJsselmonde, southeast of Rotterdam.
Historically, Rijsoord was an independent municipality until 1970, when it was merged into Ridderkerk. The village is situated along the river Waal and is known for its historic character and its location within a more rural part of the heavily urbanized Randstad region.
Rijsoord is primarily a residential area, although it also has some local businesses and agricultural activity. It is known for the "Rijsoordse Verklaring" (Rijsoord Declaration), the surrender document signed by the Dutch army to the German forces on 15 May 1940, after the bombing of Rotterdam, effectively marking the beginning of the German occupation of the Netherlands during World War II. A memorial and museum commemorate this event.
