Rhinoceros (band)

Rhinoceros was a Canadian-American rock band active from 1968 to 1970. Formed in Los Angeles, California, by Elektra Records staff producer Paul Rothchild, the band was conceived as a supergroup intended to rival bands like Blood, Sweat & Tears and Chicago. Rothchild assembled the group from a pool of talented musicians, including Michael Fonfara (keyboards), Danny Weis (guitar, formerly of Iron Butterfly), Alan Gerber (vocals, keyboards), John Finley (vocals), Peter Hodgson (bass, vocals), and Billy Mundi (drums, formerly of The Mothers of Invention).

Rhinoceros was known for its powerful horn-driven rock and intricate instrumental arrangements. They released two studio albums on Elektra Records: Rhinoceros (1968) and Satin Chickens (1969). While the band garnered some critical acclaim and a moderate following, they failed to achieve the commercial success Rothchild had envisioned.

The band underwent several lineup changes during its short lifespan. Alan Gerber left after the first album, and Danny Weis departed shortly after. Doug Hastings and Larry Leishman joined to fill their positions.

Rhinoceros disbanded in 1970. Despite their limited commercial success, the band is remembered for its innovative blend of rock, jazz, and blues, and for the impressive musicianship of its members. Members went on to other projects, with Michael Fonfara having a successful career as a session musician and solo artist, and John Finley continuing as a blues and soul singer. The band's albums have been reissued on CD, keeping their music available to a new generation of listeners.
