Rover 8

Rover 8 was a proposed, but ultimately unrealized, model from the British Leyland (BL) company in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It was intended to be a successor to the Rover SD1, a large executive car that was proving expensive to build and, in some quarters, perceived as unreliable.

The Rover 8 project aimed to produce a more modern, efficient, and cost-effective vehicle that could compete in the same market segment. Numerous design studies and engineering exercises were undertaken. Different powertrain options were considered, including updated versions of existing BL engines as well as potentially sourced engines from other manufacturers.

The development was hampered by several factors, including BL's financial difficulties, industrial disputes, and restructuring efforts. The project was repeatedly delayed and subject to revisions. Ultimately, the Rover 8 was cancelled in favor of a collaboration with Honda, which led to the Rover 800 series (marketed initially as the Rover Sterling). The Rover 800 used a Honda-designed platform and engine, but with Rover-designed styling and interior appointments. Therefore, while the name "Rover 8" never saw production, the spirit of the project – to produce a modern executive car – was arguably fulfilled by the 800 series.
