Pathemari

Pathemari (also spelled "Pathumari") refers to a specific type of traditional, hand-built wooden sailing vessel originating from the Beypore region of Kerala, India. These ships were historically used for trade between India and the Persian Gulf countries, primarily for carrying goods like spices, timber, and textiles.

Pathemaris are characterized by their distinctive design, featuring a large, shallow draft, a single mast, and a distinctive hull shape optimized for navigating the shallow coastal waters of the Arabian Sea. Construction typically involves skilled artisans using locally sourced wood, applying traditional shipbuilding techniques passed down through generations.

While their use in long-distance trade has significantly declined due to modern shipping methods, Pathemaris still hold cultural and historical significance in Kerala. Some continue to operate as fishing vessels or are repurposed for tourism, offering visitors a glimpse into the region's rich maritime heritage. The construction of Pathemaris is also preserved as a traditional craft.
