Pomino

Pomino is a geographical region and Italian wine appellation located in the hills east of Florence, in Tuscany, Italy. It is known for producing primarily white wines, though some red wines are also made.

Overview

The Pomino DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) was established in 1983. The region's altitude contributes to cooler temperatures than other areas of Tuscany, which benefits the white grapes grown there. The Antinori family, particularly with their Castello di Pomino estate, has played a significant role in the development and reputation of the Pomino wines.

Wines

  • Pomino Bianco: This white wine is primarily made from Pinot Bianco and Chardonnay, often blended with other permitted white grape varieties. It is typically dry, crisp, and aromatic.
  • Pomino Rosso: The red wine is primarily Sangiovese, often blended with other permitted red grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
  • Pomino Vin Santo: A dessert wine made from dried Trebbiano and Malvasia grapes.

Geography and Climate

The Pomino zone is characterized by its hilly terrain and relatively high altitude, ranging from 300 to 700 meters above sea level. This altitude, combined with the region's proximity to the Apennine Mountains, creates a cooler climate compared to other parts of Tuscany. This allows for a longer ripening period for the grapes, contributing to the wines' acidity and aromatic complexity.

History

Wine production in the Pomino area dates back centuries. The Antinori family has been involved in winemaking in Pomino since the late 19th century, investing in the vineyards and winemaking facilities, and helping to establish Pomino as a quality wine region.
