People's National Congress (Maldives)
The People's National Congress (PNC) is a political party in the Maldives. Founded in 2019, the PNC emerged from a faction of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and quickly became a significant political force in the country. The party's formation was closely linked to the political activities of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, although he was not initially publicly named as its leader.
The PNC gained prominence in Maldivian politics during a period of significant political realignment and competition. It positioned itself as a conservative party often emphasizing national unity, development, and Islamic values. The party has participated in parliamentary and local elections, achieving notable successes and solidifying its position as a major player in the Maldivian political landscape. The PNC's influence has been particularly evident in its ability to mobilize support and shape political discourse on key national issues. After the 2023 presidential election, the PNC came to form the government of the Maldives.
