Jack Kelly (actor)
Jack Kelly (1927 – 1992) was an American actor best known for his role as Bart Maverick in the ABC western television series Maverick.
Early Life and Career:
Born John Augustus Kelly Jr. in Astoria, Queens, New York City, Kelly came from a theatrical family. His mother was a stage actress, and he started his acting career early, appearing in radio dramas and on stage. He moved to Hollywood in the 1950s and began landing roles in films, often in supporting parts in westerns and adventure films.
Maverick:
Kelly's big break came in 1957 when he was cast as Bart Maverick, the brother of Bret Maverick (James Garner), in the television series Maverick. Garner's popularity led to the show's initial success. When Garner left the series in 1960 due to a contract dispute, Kelly became the sole star, joined later by Roger Moore as cousin Beau Maverick and Robert Colbert as a third Maverick brother, Brent. Kelly's portrayal of the charming, quick-witted gambler helped the show maintain its popularity. Maverick ran until 1962.
Post-Maverick Career:
After Maverick, Kelly continued to work in television and film, guest-starring in numerous popular series, including The Love Boat, Fantasy Island, and Get Smart. He also appeared in several films. However, he was often typecast as a charming rogue or gambler, making it difficult for him to escape the shadow of Bart Maverick.
Politics and Later Life:
In the 1980s, Kelly became involved in politics and served as the mayor of Huntington Beach, California, from 1986 to 1989. He remained active in local politics until his death.

Jack Kelly died of a stroke on November 7, 1992, in Huntington Beach, California. He was 65 years old.
