Osogovo
Osogovo (Осогово) is a mountain range and region located on the border between North Macedonia and Bulgaria. The highest peak, Ruen (Руен), stands at 2,251 meters (7,385 feet) and is located in Bulgarian territory.
The Osogovo Mountains are characterized by their rolling hills, lush forests, and abundant mineral resources, including lead, zinc, and copper. The range is a popular destination for hiking, skiing, and other outdoor activities.
The Osogovo region also refers to the surrounding areas on both sides of the border, known for its agricultural traditions and cultural heritage. Several villages and small towns are situated in and around the mountains, relying primarily on agriculture, forestry, and tourism.
Historically, the Osogovo region has been part of various empires and kingdoms, including the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, and the Ottoman Empire. Its strategic location has made it a contested area throughout history.
The name "Osogovo" is of uncertain origin, with several theories linking it to Thracian, Slavic, or other ancient languages. The meaning of the name remains debated among linguists and historians.
