Oochiton

Oochiton is a genus of polyplacophorans belonging to the family Ischnochitonidae. These marine mollusks are commonly known as chitons. Oochiton species are characterized by their flattened, elongated bodies covered by eight overlapping shell plates, also known as valves. These plates are embedded in a leathery girdle.

Oochiton species are found in various marine habitats, typically adhering to rocks or other hard substrates in intertidal or subtidal zones. They graze on algae and other microorganisms using a specialized feeding organ called a radula, which is equipped with rows of teeth.

The taxonomy of Oochiton, like that of many chitons, has been subject to revisions, and the classification of particular species within the genus may vary depending on the scientific source consulted. Further research is ongoing to clarify the phylogenetic relationships within the Ischnochitonidae family and the placement of specific Oochiton species.

Reproduction in Oochiton involves the release of gametes into the water column, where fertilization occurs. The resulting larvae undergo a period of planktonic development before settling and metamorphosing into juvenile chitons.
