Gubeer

Gubeer is an archaic term, primarily used in the Shetland Islands, referring to a specific type of small, simple boat. These boats were typically clinker-built (overlapping planks), open, and used for inshore fishing and transport. Gubeers were smaller and less substantial than the larger sixareens also common in Shetland. Their construction and design were adapted to the relatively sheltered waters around the islands and the specific needs of local fishermen. While not as common in contemporary use, the term remains part of the historical maritime vocabulary of Shetland. Gubeers were traditionally built by local craftsmen using locally sourced materials whenever possible.
