Nosferatu (Popol Vuh album)

Nosferatu is a studio album by the German progressive rock band Popol Vuh, released in 1978 on the Egg label. It is the soundtrack to Werner Herzog's film Nosferatu the Vampyre, a remake of the classic 1922 silent film Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens.

The album continues Popol Vuh's exploration of spiritual and ethereal soundscapes, blending elements of classical music, ambient textures, and Florian Fricke's signature use of the Moog synthesizer. The music is generally considered darker and more melancholic than some of their earlier work, reflecting the film's themes of horror, isolation, and the struggle between good and evil.

While not a direct adaptation of the film's scenes, the album's tracks evoke the overall atmosphere and emotional tone of Nosferatu the Vampyre. The music is used sparingly within the film, often creating a sense of dread and foreboding.

The album features the core lineup of Popol Vuh at the time: Florian Fricke on piano, synthesizer, and vocals; Daniel Fichelscher on guitar and drums; and Djong Yun on vocals.

Key tracks on the album include "Brüder des Schattens - Söhne des Lichts" and "Die Nacht der grossen Flut." The album is considered a significant work in Popol Vuh's discography and a notable example of film soundtrack composition.
