Nightgown

A nightgown (also known as a nightdress or sleepdress) is a loose-fitting item of clothing worn by women and girls to sleep in. Nightgowns are typically made of soft, comfortable materials such as cotton, silk, satin, or flannel. They vary in length, ranging from short, above-the-knee styles to floor-length gowns. Styles also vary considerably, from simple, utilitarian designs to more elaborate styles featuring lace, embroidery, or other embellishments.

Historically, nightgowns were often plain and functional, primarily intended to provide warmth and modesty. Over time, they evolved into more decorative garments, reflecting changes in fashion and social norms. The style and material of a nightgown can indicate its purpose (e.g., lightweight cotton for warm weather, heavy flannel for cold weather) and, to some extent, its social context or the wearer's personal preferences. The term "nightgown" generally refers to a single-piece garment, as opposed to two-piece pajama sets.
