Wang Han (poet)

Wang Han (王翰, fl. 618-713 AD) was a Chinese poet of the Tang dynasty. While relatively little is known about his life with certainty, he is best known for his poem "Liangzhou Ci" (涼州詞), which paints a vibrant picture of soldiers celebrating a victory with wine and music on the frontier.

Life and Career:

Information regarding Wang Han's life is scant and often contradictory. He is traditionally said to have lived during the early to mid-Tang Dynasty. Some sources suggest he served as an official, perhaps as a censor, but details regarding his official career are not definitively established. Different accounts suggest he was either from Jinling (present-day Nanjing) or from Beizhou. Later legends paint him as a dissolute figure who spent his time drinking and carousing.

His most famous work, "Liangzhou Ci" (also translated as "Drinking Wine"), is a short jueju (quatrain) that has been widely anthologized and remains popular to this day.
