Netrokona

Netrokona is a district located in the Mymensingh Division of Bangladesh. Situated in the northeastern part of the country, it is bordered by the Indian state of Meghalaya to the north, Mymensingh and Kishoreganj districts to the south, Sunamganj district to the east, and Mymensingh district to the west.

History:

Historically, the area was part of various kingdoms and zamindari estates. The name "Netrokona" is believed to be derived from "Netra Khan," a local landlord or a prominent figure. During the British colonial period, it was a subdivision under Mymensingh district. Netrokona was officially declared a district in 1984.

Geography and Climate:

The district's topography is characterized by plains and wetlands, with some hilly areas in the northern part near the Meghalaya border. The major rivers flowing through Netrokona include the Kangsa, Mogra, and Dhala. The climate is generally tropical, with hot, humid summers and mild winters. The monsoon season brings significant rainfall.

Economy:

Agriculture is the primary economic activity in Netrokona. Rice, jute, and mustard are the main crops. Fishing is also an important occupation due to the presence of numerous water bodies. The district has some industrial activity, including rice mills and small-scale industries.

Demographics:

The population of Netrokona is predominantly Bengali Muslim. There are also significant Hindu and indigenous communities. The literacy rate is lower compared to the national average.

Administration:

Netrokona district is divided into several sub-districts (upazilas) for administrative purposes. These upazilas are further divided into union parishads and villages. The district administration is headed by a Deputy Commissioner.

Culture and Tourism:

Netrokona has a rich cultural heritage, with folk music, dance, and traditional crafts being prominent. The Birishiri Cultural Academy is a notable institution promoting local arts and culture. Some tourist attractions include the Garo Hills region near Durgapur upazila, the Dhalu Bill wetlands, and various historical sites.
