Washington County Courthouse (Georgia)
The Washington County Courthouse, located in Sandersville, Georgia, is the historic courthouse for Washington County. Constructed in 1868, it is a two-story brick building in the Italianate style. It features a prominent clock tower and cupola, arched windows, and a bracketed cornice.
The courthouse is significant for its association with the political and legal history of Washington County and for its architectural design, which is a good example of post-Civil War courthouse architecture in Georgia. It has served as the center of county government since its completion and has been the site of numerous legal proceedings, political rallies, and other civic events.
The building underwent significant renovations in the early 2000s to modernize its facilities while preserving its historic character. The courthouse remains in active use and houses the county's courtrooms, administrative offices, and other governmental functions. It is a contributing property to the Sandersville Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
