Nesospiza

Nesospiza is a genus of birds in the bunting family Emberizidae. These birds are endemic to islands in the Tristan da Cunha archipelago in the South Atlantic Ocean. The genus currently contains two recognized species: the Wilkins's Bunting (Nesospiza wilkinsi) and the Nightingale Finch (Nesospiza questi). Historically, a third species, the Tristan Bunting, was included in this genus, but it has since been reclassified into its own monotypic genus, Rowettia, as Rowettia goughensis.

Nesospiza species are typically found in grasslands, scrub, and sometimes rocky areas of their respective islands. They are ground-feeding birds, foraging for seeds, insects, and other invertebrates. Conservation status varies for the two species, with Wilkins's Bunting listed as Endangered due to its small population size and restricted habitat. Nightingale Finches are currently listed as Least Concern. Their populations are dependent on the fragile island ecosystems they inhabit, making them vulnerable to habitat degradation and invasive species. The name Nesospiza is derived from the Greek words "nesos" meaning island, and "spiza" referring to a finch.
