Boosting (video games)
Boosting in video games refers to the act of one or more players, typically with higher skill or experience, assisting another player (or players) of lower skill or experience to achieve a higher rank, level, or in-game reward that they would not be able to obtain on their own. This assistance can take many forms, including playing alongside the weaker player, playing for the weaker player (often involving account sharing), or providing strategic advice and resources.
Boosting is often seen as a controversial practice within gaming communities. While the boosted player may benefit in the short term by obtaining a higher rank or desired item, it can negatively impact the overall gaming experience for others. Boosted players may be unable to perform at the skill level associated with their new rank, leading to frustration for their teammates in competitive game modes. Furthermore, boosting can devalue the accomplishments of players who legitimately earned their rank through hard work and dedication.
The motivations for boosting vary. Some players seek boosting services to unlock specific content, access higher-level gameplay, or simply to brag about a higher rank. Others may be motivated by monetary gain, offering boosting services for a fee.
Different games have different policies regarding boosting. Some game developers strictly prohibit it, considering it a form of cheating or unfair play. These games may implement measures to detect and punish boosters and boosted players, potentially through temporary or permanent account bans. Other games may tolerate boosting to a certain extent, but actively discourage or prohibit account sharing, which is often a component of boosting services. The ethical implications of boosting also vary depending on the game and the context, with some players viewing it as harmless assistance while others consider it a form of exploitation.
