Gordon Campbell (Canadian politician)
Gordon Campbell (born January 12, 1948) is a Canadian politician and businessman who served as the 34th Premier of British Columbia from 2001 to 2011. He was leader of the British Columbia Liberal Party during that period, leading the party to three consecutive majority governments in 2001, 2005, and 2009.
Before entering provincial politics, Campbell served as the Mayor of Vancouver from 1986 to 1993. During his mayoral tenure, Vancouver hosted Expo 86 and successfully bid for the 2010 Winter Olympics.
As Premier, Campbell implemented significant policy changes, including tax cuts, reforms to healthcare and education, and the introduction of the carbon tax, a first in North America. His government also oversaw the preparation for and hosting of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
Campbell's premiership was marked by both successes and controversies. While lauded for his economic policies and Olympic achievements, he faced criticism for issues such as the implementation of the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) and his handling of various social issues.
Following his resignation as Premier in 2011, Campbell served as Canada's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom from 2011 to 2016.
