Nelson Island (British Columbia)

Nelson Island is an island located in the Sunshine Coast region of British Columbia, Canada. It lies within the traditional territory of the Coast Salish peoples, specifically the Sechelt (shíshálh) Nation.

Geography: Nelson Island is situated in the Strait of Georgia, north of the Sechelt Peninsula and west of Texada Island. It is characterized by its rugged coastline, numerous bays, inlets, and sheltered anchorages. The island is largely undeveloped, with a significant portion covered by forests and rocky terrain.

Communities: The primary communities on Nelson Island are Egmont and Westview. Egmont is a small village located on the eastern side of the island, known as a gateway to Princess Louisa Inlet (Chatterbox Falls). Westview is a smaller, more remote settlement.

Access: Access to Nelson Island is primarily by boat or floatplane. BC Ferries provides service to Egmont from the mainland. Private boaters also frequently visit the island, taking advantage of its protected anchorages.

Economy: The economy of Nelson Island is largely based on tourism, forestry, and fishing. Egmont, in particular, benefits from its proximity to Princess Louisa Inlet, attracting tourists interested in exploring the inlet's natural beauty.
