Fu Yue

Fu Yue (傅說) was a legendary minister and advisor to King Wu Ding (武丁) of the Shang Dynasty in ancient China (c. 13th century BCE). According to historical accounts, King Wu Ding, distressed by a lack of wise advisors, was instructed in a dream to seek out a sage named Fu Yue. He described Fu Yue's appearance to his ministers and ordered them to search for a person matching the description.

Fu Yue was eventually found working as a construction worker in a village called Fu Yan (傅巖, sometimes translated as "Fu Rock"). Impressed by Fu Yue's wisdom and understanding of governance, King Wu Ding appointed him as his prime minister.

Fu Yue is credited with guiding King Wu Ding to rule with benevolence, justice, and prosperity. He is considered a model of a virtuous and capable minister, and his story is often cited as an example of the importance of seeking out and recognizing talent, regardless of social status.

The Shangshu (尚書, Book of Documents) contains sections attributed to Fu Yue, which are believed to be later compositions but nonetheless reflect the values associated with his legendary role. These sections outline principles of good governance, emphasizing the ruler's responsibility to care for the people and to appoint worthy officials.

Fu Yue's legacy extends beyond historical accounts. He is sometimes deified in Chinese folk religion, particularly among those seeking success in their careers or assistance in finding wise counsel. His story continues to be used as a moral example and a symbol of the potential for individuals from humble backgrounds to achieve greatness through wisdom and virtue.
