Gauriac
Gauriac, also spelled Gauriacum, is a commune in the Gironde department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine in southwestern France. It is located on the right bank of the Gironde estuary, opposite the town of Lamarque on the left bank in the Médoc wine region.
Geography: Gauriac is situated on a limestone promontory offering panoramic views of the Gironde estuary. Its elevated position made it strategically important throughout its history.
History: The history of Gauriac dates back to Roman times, likely indicated by the similar spelling to its possible latin name, Gauriacum. Its position on the estuary made it a point of control for river traffic. Over the centuries, it was fortified and played a role in various conflicts. The town experienced significant viticultural development from the middle ages onwards.
