National Police Corps (Spain)

The National Police Corps (Spanish: Cuerpo Nacional de Policía, CNP), previously known as the Superior Police Corps (Spanish: Cuerpo Superior de Policía) until 1986, is a national police force of Spain. It operates under the authority of Spain's Ministry of the Interior.

The CNP is one of two national police forces in Spain, the other being the Civil Guard (Spanish: Guardia Civil). The National Police is primarily responsible for policing urban areas, while the Civil Guard has a broader mandate, including rural areas, highways, and border patrol.

Key responsibilities of the National Police Corps include:

  • Investigating serious crimes, such as terrorism, drug trafficking, organized crime, and economic crimes.
  • Maintaining public order and security in urban areas.
  • Controlling identity documents and immigration.
  • Enforcing laws related to gambling, drugs, and weapons.
  • Providing protection to dignitaries and government buildings.
  • Collaborating with international law enforcement agencies.

The CNP is organized into various units specializing in different areas of law enforcement. These units include those dedicated to counter-terrorism, organized crime, scientific police, citizen security, and immigration.

The National Police Academy, located in Ávila, is responsible for training new officers and providing ongoing professional development for serving members of the force.

The CNP is a civilian police force, distinct from the military-style Civil Guard. Officers of the National Police are armed and wear distinctive uniforms. Recruitment to the CNP is through a competitive examination process.
