Montone (river)
The Montone is a river located in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy. It originates in the Apennine Mountains, specifically near Monte Treggi in the Foreste Casentinesi, Monte Falterona e Campigna National Park, and flows generally northeastward. It traverses the province of Forlì-Cesena and the province of Ravenna before joining with the Ronco River near Ravenna. The combined rivers then flow into the Adriatic Sea.
The Montone has a length of approximately 91 kilometers. Its watershed is characterized by diverse landscapes, ranging from mountainous forests in its upper reaches to agricultural plains in its lower course. The river is an important water resource for the region, supporting agriculture and industry.
Historically, the Montone has been prone to flooding, particularly in the low-lying areas near its confluence with the Ronco. Efforts have been made over the centuries to manage the river's flow and mitigate flood risks, including the construction of levees and other hydraulic engineering works.
The Montone river valley has been inhabited since ancient times, and numerous towns and villages are situated along its banks. These settlements have historically relied on the river for water, transportation, and economic activity.
