Harold Black (artist)
Harold Black (1925-2018) was an American artist known for his abstract expressionist paintings and prints. Born in New York City, he studied at the Art Students League and later at Atelier 17 under Stanley William Hayter, where he developed a mastery of printmaking techniques. Black's work often explored themes of urban life, human interaction, and the natural world, rendered through bold colors, dynamic compositions, and a distinctive gestural style. He exhibited widely throughout his career, including shows at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Brooklyn Museum. His works are held in numerous public and private collections. Late in his career, Black shifted towards a more lyrical abstraction, incorporating softer palettes and flowing forms. He was also an educator, teaching at several institutions including the Pratt Institute.
