Moose Mountain (federal electoral district)
Moose Mountain was a federal electoral district in Saskatchewan, Canada, that existed from 1908 to 1997.
History and Boundaries:
The riding was created in 1907 from parts of the provisional district of Assiniboia East. It was located in the southeastern portion of Saskatchewan. Throughout its existence, the boundaries of Moose Mountain shifted to reflect population changes and redistributions, but it generally encompassed communities such as Carlyle, Estevan, Oxbow, and Moosomin.
Representation:
Moose Mountain elected one Member of Parliament (MP) to the House of Commons using the first-past-the-post electoral system.
Political Landscape:
The political landscape of Moose Mountain varied throughout its history. While traditionally a Conservative leaning riding, it also saw periods of representation by the Liberal party and other parties. Factors influencing the electoral outcomes included national political trends, regional economic issues (particularly related to agriculture), and the popularity of local candidates.
Notable MPs:
Several notable figures represented Moose Mountain in the House of Commons. A detailed list of MPs and their terms of office can be found in historical election records.
Abolition:
In 1996, as part of a broader electoral redistribution process, the Moose Mountain electoral district was abolished. Its territory was primarily redistributed into the ridings of Souris—Moose Mountain and Qu'Appelle.
