Jack Evans (Australian politician)
Jack Evans (born 16 July 1927, died 13 April 2018) was an Australian politician who served as a Senator for Western Australia from 1983 to 1993. He represented the Australian Democrats.
Evans was born in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. Before entering politics, he worked in a variety of roles, including as a surveyor and prospector. He joined the Australian Democrats party shortly after its formation in 1977 and quickly became a prominent figure within the party in Western Australia.
Evans was first elected to the Senate in the 1983 federal election, taking his seat on 21 April 1983. During his time in the Senate, he was known for his advocacy on environmental issues, particularly relating to the protection of Western Australia's native forests and the prevention of uranium mining. He also championed social justice causes and advocated for greater accountability in government.
He held various party leadership positions, including serving as the Democrats' Deputy Leader in the Senate. He was known for his independent and often outspoken views, which occasionally put him at odds with the party leadership.
Evans retired from the Senate at the 1993 federal election. After leaving politics, he remained active in community affairs and continued to advocate for environmental protection. He passed away in Perth in April 2018.
