Moll King (coffee house proprietor)

Moll King (c. 1700 – 1747) was a well-known London coffee house proprietor in the early 18th century. She ran a popular establishment frequented by writers, wits, and members of London's social and literary circles. Her coffee house, located near the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane, became a gathering place known for its lively atmosphere, intellectual discussions, and, according to some accounts, a less-than-reputable clientele at certain hours.

King herself was a colorful character, noted for her sharp wit, business acumen, and perceived eccentricity. She cultivated a distinct persona, and her coffee house gained a reputation partly through her own notoriety. While surviving accounts offer varying portrayals of her character, she is generally depicted as a shrewd businesswoman who capitalized on the social trends of the time.

Her life and business were documented in contemporary sources, including pamphlets, poems, and theatrical productions. These often exaggerated aspects of her personality or the alleged impropriety of her coffee house for comedic effect. Moll King’s name and establishment became synonymous with a certain type of London social life during the Georgian era, contributing to the evolving culture of coffee houses as spaces for both business and leisure. Following her death, the coffee house continued under new management, but the unique atmosphere created by Moll King was never fully replicated.
