Mollösund

Mollösund is a small village and a former municipality situated on the island of Orust in Bohuslän, Sweden. It is located on the western coast of the island and faces the Skagerrak sea. Historically a fishing community, Mollösund retains its character with well-preserved wooden houses and a harbor that is still active, although tourism now plays a significant role in the local economy.

History: Mollösund has a long history as a fishing port, dating back centuries. Its strategic location made it an important center for herring fishing, particularly during the great herring periods. The village also served as a pilot station, guiding ships through the often treacherous waters along the Bohuslän coast. The former municipality of Mollösund was incorporated into the larger Orust Municipality in 1952.

Geography: Mollösund is characterized by its rocky coastline and proximity to several smaller islands and skerries. The landscape is typical of the Bohuslän archipelago.

Economy: While fishing continues to be present, tourism is now a major industry. Mollösund attracts visitors with its picturesque scenery, opportunities for sailing and boating, and access to the surrounding islands. Several restaurants, shops, and accommodations cater to tourists during the summer months.

Culture: Mollösund preserves aspects of its maritime heritage. Traditional wooden boats are still seen in the harbor, and local museums showcase the history of fishing and seafaring in the area. The village is also known for its Midsummer celebrations and other traditional Swedish festivals.

Transportation: Mollösund is accessible by road, with connections to the mainland via bridges to the island of Orust. Bus services also operate to and from the village. Boat services connect Mollösund to other islands in the archipelago.
