Mental Notes (Split Enz album)
Mental Notes is the second studio album by New Zealand art rock band Split Enz. It was released in July 1975. The album marks a significant transition for the band, moving away from the more theatrically-driven style of their debut, Mental Notes, and hinting at the poppier direction they would later take.
The album was recorded at Basing Street Studios in London with producer Phil Manzanera (of Roxy Music fame). Despite Manzanera's involvement, the album failed to achieve significant commercial success upon its initial release.
Key members of Split Enz at the time of Mental Notes's recording included Tim Finn, Phil Judd, Eddie Rayner, Noel Crombie, and Rob Gillies. The album features a variety of musical styles, incorporating elements of progressive rock, art rock, and cabaret. Some notable tracks include "Stranger Than Fiction," "Walking Down a Road," and "Titus." The album is known for its complex arrangements, unusual instrumentation, and quirky lyrical content.
While not a commercial breakthrough, Mental Notes is considered an important album in Split Enz's discography, showcasing their artistic ambition and musical experimentation during their early years. It has since gained a cult following and is appreciated by fans for its originality and unique sound.
