Maomao (The Apothecary Diaries)

Maomao is the protagonist of the Japanese light novel series "The Apothecary Diaries" (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto), written by Natsu Hyūga and illustrated by Touko Shino.

Maomao is a highly intelligent and observant young woman with a deep knowledge of herbs, poisons, and medicine. She originally lived in the pleasure district before being kidnapped and forced to work as a servant in the imperial palace. Possessing a strong curiosity and a penchant for experimentation, she frequently finds herself embroiled in mysteries and intrigues within the palace walls.

Despite her initial reluctance to get involved, Maomao uses her knowledge and skills to solve medical problems and uncover conspiracies, often putting herself in danger. She has a pragmatic and independent personality, and while not outwardly expressive, she genuinely cares for those around her who are in need. Her expertise often brings her into contact with Jinshi, a high-ranking and enigmatic eunuch, with whom she develops a complex and evolving relationship. Maomao’s unique skillset and sharp wit make her a valuable, if unconventional, asset to the imperial court. Her primary motivation stems from a deep-seated interest in toxicology and pharmacology rather than a desire for power or status.
