M1 (Paris Métro)
The M1, also known as Line 1, is the oldest and one of the busiest lines of the Paris Métro. It connects La Défense-Grande Arche in the west to Château de Vincennes in the east, traversing central Paris in an east-west direction.
Line 1 is notable for being the first line to be fully automated, a process completed in 2012. Prior to automation, the line was operated using manually driven trains. The transition to automation involved a complete overhaul of the signalling system and the installation of platform screen doors at all stations to enhance safety.
Key stations along Line 1 include Charles de Gaulle – Étoile (serving the Arc de Triomphe), Châtelet (a major interchange station), and Gare de Lyon (connecting to national and international rail services). The line serves numerous important landmarks and business districts, making it a crucial artery in the Paris public transport network.
The line is operated by the RATP (Régie Autonome des Transports Parisiens), the public transport operator for Paris. The automated trains on Line 1 operate under the name MP 05, replacing the older MP 89 CC rolling stock.
