Life pool
A life pool, primarily used in the context of video games, refers to a numerical representation of a character's health or hit points, which depletes upon taking damage and replenishes through healing or regeneration. Unlike a simple health bar, the life pool often represents a larger, more granular quantity of health. Damage is subtracted from the life pool, and when the pool reaches zero (or a pre-determined critical value), the character typically dies, becomes incapacitated, or enters a different state (e.g., knocked down).
The term "life pool" is often used when the precise numerical value of the health is important for gameplay mechanics, such as damage calculation, healing effects, or status conditions that scale with the amount of remaining health. It emphasizes the quantitative nature of the health representation. The term is also used to distinguish a health system from other systems like stamina or mana. A life pool can be influenced by various game mechanics, including armor, resistances, buffs, and debuffs, all impacting how damage is received and health is restored.
