Kwakwani

Kwakwani is a town located in the Upper Demerara-Berbice region of Guyana. It is situated on the Berbice River, approximately 100 miles (160 km) south of Linden. The town's economy is primarily based on bauxite mining, though logging and farming also contribute to the local economy.

Kwakwani was established in the 1950s by the Demerara Bauxite Company (Demba), a subsidiary of Alcan (Aluminum Company of Canada), to house workers and support the expanding bauxite operations in the area. The town's infrastructure was largely developed by the company.

Over time, Kwakwani has evolved into a community that faces challenges common to resource-dependent towns, including fluctuating market prices for bauxite and the need for diversification of the local economy. The town also faces infrastructural challenges due to its remote location. Despite these challenges, Kwakwani remains an important settlement in the Upper Demerara-Berbice region.
