Simulation Theory (album)
Simulation Theory is the eighth studio album by the English rock band Muse, released on November 9, 2018, through Warner Bros. Records and Helium-3.
The album's sound is heavily influenced by science fiction and 1980s retrofuturism, drawing inspiration from films, video games, and literature of the era. Musically, Simulation Theory incorporates a variety of styles, including synth-pop, electronic rock, orchestral arrangements, and funk, alongside Muse's signature alternative rock sound.
Thematically, the album explores concepts of simulation, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and the potential for a simulated reality. The artwork, designed by Kyle Lambert (known for his work on Stranger Things), visually reinforces the album's 1980s science fiction aesthetic.
Preceded by several singles including "Dig Down," "Thought Contagion," "Something Human," "The Dark Side," and "Pressure," Simulation Theory received mixed reviews upon release. While some critics praised its ambition and sonic experimentation, others found it to be unfocused and lacking in the band's earlier intensity. Despite the mixed critical reception, the album was commercially successful, reaching the top of the charts in several countries.
A deluxe edition of the album was also released, featuring additional tracks, including alternate versions and acoustic renditions of songs from the standard edition. A film based on the album, titled Simulation Theory, was released in 2020, combining concert footage with a narrative storyline that expanded on the album's themes.
