Yasana

The Yasna is the principal liturgical collection of texts in Zoroastrianism, and is the basis for the Yasna ceremony, a central act of worship. The word "Yasna" itself translates to "worship" or "sacrifice" in Avestan, the ancient Iranian language in which the texts are written.

The Yasna consists of 72 chapters, known as ha or haiti. These chapters are a compilation of hymns, prayers, and liturgical formulas used in the Yasna ceremony. The text is traditionally recited by Zoroastrian priests, known as mobeds, during the performance of the ritual.

Significant sections within the Yasna include:

  • The Gathas: These are considered the most sacred portion of the Yasna. They are attributed to Zoroaster himself and contain his teachings, hymns, and philosophical insights. They represent the core of Zoroastrian doctrine.

  • Yasna Haptanghaiti (Yasna of Seven Chapters): Chapters 35-41. This section is written in an older dialect of Avestan than the rest of the Yasna, and is dedicated to various divine beings and principles.

The Yasna ceremony is a complex ritual that involves the preparation of sacred substances like parahaom (a type of juice) and the recitation of the Yasna texts. The ceremony aims to reinforce the connection between the earthly and spiritual realms, to purify the world, and to invoke blessings and prosperity. The Yasna holds a central place in Zoroastrian religious practice and provides a framework for understanding and expressing Zoroastrian beliefs.
